Maria A. Friedman, D.B.A., is a national expert on e-prescribing and a wide range of other health information technology (HIT) policy and implementation issues. She heads her own firm, Brookside Consulting Group, in Silver Spring, MD, which also provides services related to health policy and analysis, strategic management and positioning, federal affairs, and marketing. She writes and speaks regularly on a variety of HIT-related issues.
Dr. Friedman recently retired from her position as senior advisor to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). She provided expert advice to CMS and HHS on HIPAA transactions and code sets, e-prescribing, and HIT issues, including standards, outreach, privacy, and implementation. Dr. Friedman has held many other senior positions within CMS and at the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, including serving as public affairs director for both agencies. She holds a master's degree in journalism and a doctorate in business administration, with concentrations in management and strategy.
Dr. Friedman is the mother of two grown children and sings classical music as a hobby with the National Philharmonic Chorale.
